Bird bath I mosaiced

The Birdbath ( written by my favorite birder)

I spotted the birdbath at a friend’s studio a few weeks ago. Sonja’s an artist who crafts exquisite mosaics from glass and broken china dishes. Stepping stones, garden balls, chairs, tables….

All she needs is a surface—a clay pot, a dented garbage can, an old tin, a watering jug, a coffee table, rickety chairs… No matter how worthless, Sonja makes them breathtaking—and often functional once more.

Mosaics have always intrigued me, and I love old china. So much that I tried making a mosaic from broken china myself a few weeks ago. Judy (another friend) and I sat together in the studio of another master mosaic artist named Linda and under her tutelage we each began a mosaic stepping stone.

As we worked quietly, choosing our scheme and gluing our broken pieces on the stone, I explained to Judy why I love mosaics so much. “Imagine,” I said, “all these shattered plates and cups…useless and good for nothing but the trash heap, and here we are making them into something beautiful. Isn’t it amazing?”

“Not only something beautiful, but something entirely new,” Jude observed.

Please do go and read the whole story here. It is such a heart warming story.
